Ajwan, also called carom , is native to India. It belongs to the same plant family as cumin, caraway and dill.

It is similar in fragrance to thyme. It has a spicy, slightly bitter taste. It is great as an addition to baked bread and vegetable dishes or as a topping for pies.

Used whole or crushed in a mortar.

It is also used for such ailments as abdominal pain, vomiting and fever.

In Indian cuisine it is used to prepare onion bhaji, pakora.
